Rome dispatch notes that America, the Scandinavian countries and Italy are aligned on protecting commerce. They urge that international rules govern seas over arbitrary belligerents and caution that neutral concern should not be taken as irritation at maritime commerce injuries.
The British prize court in London ruled that the wheat aboard the Miramichi, shipped from the United States to German consignees before the war, remained property of American claimants and must be paid to them. The decision aimed to determine ownership when cargoes were seized during hostilities and consignees were German firms.
Judgment dated November 23 holds the Miramichi wheat cargo remains American property and not subject to seizure. Payment to claimants ordered from in court proceeds. Leave to appeal granted but not pursued as British government favors respectful consideration. other prewar shipments to be released similarly.
Information from a private US source indicates that most firms set wartime wheat prices about 30 cents a bushel or ten shillings a quarter, far below current market. The practice is said to give exporters a windfall of roughly 50 000 to 75 000 dollars per cargo.
Mrs William Neese of St Stephens Road between Catherine and Lambert streets was seriously burned Saturday morning when her clothing caught fire from an open grate. Physicians are attending.

The federal court in New York has overruled immunity pleas by John L Billard James Ellerton and William Skinner in indictments charging Sherman law violations linked to their roles as directors of the New York New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company. A vessel named Formidable was reported to have gone down off the base near Portsmouth Station. Rescue teams and coast guard units were dispatched to the scene as authorities investigate the incident.
Survivors report the British battleship Formidable sank almost immediately after being torpedoed in the English Channel. About 600 men went down with the ship. only 160 rescued from a cutter and small boats amid a gale. Trawlers aided a perilous rescue as seas ran high.
