Fifty coach loads of home seekers toured Houston to view the Rio Grande Valley as a potential new home. The Central Committee of Committee of One Hundred urges a great fair showcasing semi-tropical products to attract investors and farmers, led by M. J. McDermott as chairman and noting a daily fair story for more details.
Marines proceed with orders as Mobile station receives dispatches.
Mobile and Gulf Coast commercial groups will meet February 18 at the Chamber of Commerce to discuss sewers contaminating oyster beds and bathing beaches. Don Farnsworth asks Dr. W. C. Gorgas to help devise a sanitary plan funded by a new committee.
Gulfport Mississippi February 12 Dr W Brown and the oyster mission along with coast mayors and citizens met to discuss sewers and streets. Attendees offered diverse theories on sewerage disposal with emphasis on the oyster industry but no definite plan emerged.
Panama dispatch reports Colonel George W. Goethals, recently named canal governor, leaving for the United States to discuss the permanent canal war organization. He plans to consult the secretary of war before naming top officials and will seek funds for fortifications and staffing.
In Taylorsville Mississippi on February 12 an oil can exploded while a woman named Mrs Matthews was filling a burning lamp. She died that afternoon. Her sister Miss Yelverton was badly injured and reported to have died from injuries while trying to help. The accident happened at the Yelverton home.
The Kyle banking bill to guarantee deposits passed the Mississippi House 122 to 2. After Senate amendments it goes to conference. The guarantee clause takes effect October 1915.
The Patent Office announced that Gordon Smith, proprietor of Smiths Bakery in Mobile Alabama, has been granted a ten year copyright on the trade mark.
The East is enveloped in cold, with New England near record lows and New York City shivering as a Texas-sourced snow storm is forecast to reach the region within 24 hours. The Weather Bureau warns of falling temperatures and brisk northeast winds ahead of the system moving toward the middle Atlantic and southern New England.
Boston records eleven degrees below zero the coldest in years, with Northfield Vermont at twenty four and Eastport Maine at twenty below. A northwester gale lashed the coast as firemen faced a fire scene with ladders from the ground, and vessels faced hazardous seas with a lifeboat assist for the leaking four masted schooner Dustin G Cressy near Pamet river.
By Associated Press New York February 12 the official mercury fell to one below zero at 7 am and was at zero by 10 am as thousands sought shelter in municipal lodging houses. Weather bureau predicted the cold spell would persist throughout the day.
Schenectady New York recorded twenty two degrees below zero early today as cold persisted across the region. The frigid air battered the area with dangerously low temperatures and wind chill factors. Officials urged residents to stay indoors and conserve heat while monitoring weather warnings.
Reports from several sections of Orange county today showed a temperature of twenty eight degrees below zero with bitter cold extending across the region and causing difficulties for residents and services.
Temperatures ranged from fifteen to twenty six degrees below zero in Michigan with six below in Detroit. Several fires in various parts of the state, hard to fight due to cold, caused damages totaling more than 300000 dollars.
At Pinehurst North Carolina twenty seven players in two flights completed the qualifying round of the St Valentine’s golf tournament for women. Leader was Mrs M D Ray of Montclair with 106. Other first flight scorers included Miss Agnes Blanche Montclair 112 Miss Hazel Shannon Buffalo 113 Mrs Guy Metcalf Providence 115 and Mrs Spaced Worth Springhaven Penn 119 with Mrs F H Crary Cranford N J also 119.
Farnsworth releases written statement disputing Armbrecht claim that the Mobile Chamber was a member of the national chamber. He says records prove the Mobile group has never belonged since November 1913 and criticizes memory of Armbrecht. Fowlkes clarifies misquotation over a dues bill and pending membership decisions. Armbrecht was detained in court Thursday.
Pickett Robinson of Lowndes County surrendered to the Haynesville sheriff after fatally shooting David Smith, a Montgomery sewing machine dealer, near Manack. Robinson says Smith fired at him twice, and he returned fire, claiming self-defense after a disputed business deal.
Meridian Miss February 12. Frank E Smith reports from John A Tyson chancer clerk Noxubee county that Sim Orr owns a gigantic hog weighing 400 pounds and that the same man raised another hog weighing 1 320 pounds.
The Item reports a flood of replies for the Spendthrift free admission contest making immediate winner announcement impossible. Winners will receive mailed tickets tonight and have their names published in tomorrow's editions.
Washington Feb 13 The Interstate Commerce Commission hearings examine how railroad allowances to large shippers fuel billions in revenue and whether free service should end. Louis D Brandeis argues rates must rise 5 percent without these practices and small shippers face discrimination. Spotted cars on spur tracks number 30 to 40 million, with debate over charging and classification.
Captain Frank G. White, hired by Governor O Nea to prosecute Theo Lacy and James G. Oakley, arrived in Montgomery and continues consultations before returning to Birmingham this afternoon.
Tokyo reports the Japanese house of representatives adopted a budget totaling 62,009,000 dollars spread over five years. The action marks approval of government spending plans amid ongoing fiscal priorities.
United States forces near El Paso resumed pursuit after a nighttime plot to seize horses and saddles at Ysleta across the Rio Grande. The witnesses argued Mobile cannot compete with rival ports until deeper channels are established and highlighted the dock system and regional trade potential across Alabama Mississippi and beyond.
More than 100 boy scouts and scout masters gathered for the fourth annual National Council session in Washington. President Wilson was to speak in the White House room but was confined to his room by illness, and a noon program without the march to the White House was arranged.
