Wrecked barkentine Bruce Hawkins saved by Penlee
The British steamer Penlee rescued seven crew members from the American barkentine Bruce Hawkins after it foundered in stormy seas 100 miles north of Bermuda. The ship, loaded with nearly 409000 feet of yellow pine, was en route from Mobile to Huelva Spain when lost. Captain J A McIver previously served as a Gulflight mate and now commanded the Hawkins in its first voyage. The vessel was built in 1889 in East Boston and owned by W A Finley of Merchantville New Jersey.
