District court clerk Richard Jones dies at 78 in Mobile
Richard Jones 78 longtime clerk of the United States district court for the Southern District of Alabama died Monday at his home in Toulminville after a brief illness. Born December 17 1887 near Linden Marengo county he later served in the Confederate Army and held various business roles before becoming a clerk in Mobile in 1877. He is survived by his wife Sallie Watkins and seven children, eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. He was a Trinity Episcopal Church member and former vestryman.

Negroes Spirited From Muskogee Jail Avert Lynch Threats
In Muskogee Oklahoma two suspects in the murder of patrolman Samuel Neal were secretly moved from the county jail as a mob of about five hundred white men besieged the jail for five hours. Armed Black citizens patrolled nearby as militiamen repelled two assaults and the prisoners were hidden in militia uniforms and taken away in a taxicab.
