Tuesday morning brought 26 degrees in Mobile the coldest mid December reading since 1898. The cold spell extended to Florida Birmingham and Chattanooga with subfreezing lows. lookouts show 6 degrees in Chattanooga and 10 degrees in Birmingham as northern winds linger.
A frigid wave across the Northwest and most of the East set new cold records today with subzero readings in West Virginia Pennsylvania Ohio Indiana and the Northwest. Forecasters predicted the low temperatures would persist through the next forty eight hours with generally fair weather in the East.
A brutal cold snap in New York dropped to 12 degrees, with forecasts of near zero. Public shelters housed hundreds of homeless, while many ships faced stormy seas and life saving stations watched coastlines for distressed vessels.

A body identified as Newton was found in a shallow grave, with no trace of Newton since. coroner doubts Newton killed Mrs. Crough as investigators weigh multiple ex-husbands, mortgages, and rumored motives.
The House naval committee debated calling Theodore Roosevelt as a witness on national defense readiness. Hobson urged Roosevelt’s testimony while Padgett and others hesitated, arguing whether the ex president should testify. Commander Stirling testified eighteen submarines exist in the Atlantic fleet and questioned their safety versus battleships.
Seven steamships are loading cotton at Savannah intended for European ports. The ship to depart next is the Tac Tomas carrying 10 000 bales, with the Hermion bound for Genoa Italy.

Barrett noted a Latin American trade surplus versus the United States of 161 791 165 driven by raw materials, with US manufacturing benefiting from processing these goods.
A 19th to early 20th century comparison shows Latin American foreign commerce rising from 910 million dollars in 1897 to 2.865 billion in 1912. The gain totals 1.954 billion dollars, about a 350 percent increase in roughly 15 years, signaling strong future potential.
