Hearings began today before the house military committee on the military appropriation bill. Secretary Garrison and Quartermaster Gen Aleshire testified to discuss needs of the military establishment for the coming session.
Commander F B Jr reports the naval militia has grown in numbers over the past year with several divisions organized and expect further gains next year. Inspectors find most units eligible for federal force allotments, though some South Carolina divisions lag. Officers dominate many posts and record-keeping on government property is weak.
Boston police push to basis for additional arrests in connection with the thefts from the Collateral Loan Company, a leading loan broker. William Blot, recently resigned as president, was charged with embezzlement amid a widening losses inquiry.
Los Angeles reports Jack Cudahy of the packing family is sued for 30000 damages by Dr and Mrs Botés alleging injuries to Mrs Coates with a rib injury and severe spine damage in a civil action filed December 4.
A Kings County grand jury indicts David A Sullivan, already jailed for wrecking the Union Bank, on three counts of grand larceny while a prisoner at Sing Sing. The alleged offenses involve mortgage payment schemes using Splivance payments. he will not be arraigned until he finishes serving his sentence, per District Attorney Cropsey.
Montgomery December 4 Henry Asa Vaughan of Tuskegee has been appointed farm demonstrator of Macon County to succeed Joel C Ford. The appointment was made by J T Watts state farm demonstration agent with the consent of the state board of agriculture.
William Rockefeller and seven other former and current New Haven Railroad directors pleaded not guilty to criminal violation charges. Pleas of immunity were entered by James B. Elton and others who testified before the Interstate Commerce Commission. Arguments will be heard by Judge Rudkin on Monday.
R Clipton Sturgis of Bedston was elected president of the American Institute of Architects at its Washington convention. C A Favrot of New Orleans was named one of the new directors.
The Newfoundland government launched relief as the steamer Kyle carries provisions toward Sandwich Bay to aid Labrador residents. War disruption, rising food prices, failed crops, and a severe influenza epidemic have left the region near starvation with fishing and mine work halted.
Associated Press dispatch from London dated December 4 reports the British superdreadnought Audacious sank off the northern coast of Ireland after a collision with what is believed to be a German mine. The incident, previously censored in England, now reaches readers despite censorship and criticism.
Kathryn Browne Decker formerly Miss Kathryn Browne of New York, wife of Edward Decker, heir to Sheffield Farms, claims he is hopelessly warped and habitually jealous. She cites threats and insults and a dinner orchestra row. Decker counters she cost him $35,000 in three years.
Chicago real estate dealer Carleton Hudson was granted a one week continuance after being arrested on suspicion of posing as Carleton H. Betters in New York to answer a twenty year old forgery charge. He appeared before Judge Gemmill and was released on bond from 2500 to 5000 until tomorrow to provide additional security. Hudson refused to discuss the charges.
Bethel bert Stewart of the labor department held a conference with T. B. Prior attorney for the Cherokee Construction Company as federal suit to cancel leases by Bache-Denman Coal Company proceeds in federal court on December 18. Stewart planned talks with Franklin Bache and miners and with Major N. F. McClure and federal troops in Hartford valley.
War has spoiled the lobster market in Ottawa and cannery operators ask the government to suspend licenses for a year to work surplus stock and rest the Atlantic coast fisheries. Fishermen oppose certain operations while both sides seek a pause to rebuild stocks.
Cleveland report says the joint conference of miners and operators of eastern Ohio coal fleets with about 15,000 on strike since April 1 ended at 12 10 this afternoon without progress toward settlement, breaking negotiations.
Snipers across the border line fired into American territory today. Antonio Bracamonte a Mexican teamster was killed, and Private John Miller of the trench cavalry was wounded. Eighteen Americans and twenty eight Mexicans have been killed or wounded since the fighting at Naco Songra began.

Extra dividend of 5 percent declared by the Interboro Rapid Transit Company, which runs New York City's transportation lines. The firm has paid 10 percent annually in regular dividends for some time.
