A vivid wartime photo shows Russian Cossacks decimating an Austrian cavalry brigade on the frontier. Reports from St Petersburg say Czar Nicholas has mobilized every fighting-age man, with Grand Duke Nicholaievitch poised to become chief aide if the czar takes the field.
