On the Galician front the Russians swept the sector clear with further advances along the upper Sereth. Austrians retreat as Russians pursue them toward the Dniester northern bank near Mariampol, forcing an Austrian retreat and trapping their commander amid the drive toward Lemberg.
Semi official reports describe General Letchitzky pushing behind Von Bothmer's right flank while General Scherbatchoff closes in on the left. Austrian forces withdraw along a line through Zlochoff to Halicz, twenty miles west of Tar nop al and Buczacz, escaping the Stripa line without a battle.

A white man about 55 to 60 years old, wearing a D. & B. Mobile suit and a spectacle case marked 155 Dauphin street, died by self-inflicted gunshot on a lumber barge at the head of Common street New Orleans. Police seek to identify him through descriptions and belongings.

Sunday morning at 9 40 o clock a defective flue caused a fire at 703 North Franklin Street damaging a one story frame dwelling occupied by Sam Jones and owned by Mrs Woolf. In the afternoon at 3 25 o'clock a fire started in the kitchen roof at 652 Delaware Street and damaged the same type of dwelling occupied by Lizzie Pope and owned by N L Vickers. occupants put out the flames.
J W Slaughter former Draper North Carolina chief of police was found guilty of manslaughter in Wentworth superior court. He received a two year prison term and a $400 fine payable to the widow of Thomas Weaver. The jury authorized hiring out Slaughter during the sentence and his wife has bid for his services.
Aug 14 dispatch from San Sebastian says the Spanish premier held talks with the Austrian ambassador in Paris.
Judge Henry Chamberlain of the inferior criminal court is commissioned as a delegate to the American Prison Association annual meeting. The event runs October 7 to 12 in Buffalo New York with leaders in prison work from across the country in attendance.
The board authorized bidding for a 150000 school bond issue to open on September 11. One bid for a 125-foot steel bridge span near Wilmer on Moffat road was rejected. new bids are invited to open September 1 from H S Wetherill of Chicago who asked 3700. County Treasurer Stone noted a decline in road tax collection and outlined tick eradication spending totaling 8361.97 with salaries 3817.49 chemicals 626.88 and other expenses 13.60.
B O Mitchell of Lucedale Iss stated the Puppy Creek bridge is in poor condition after a horse was injured last week crossing it. The issue was sent to the road department for action. The bridge is on at Earlville. The Mobile Light and Railroad Company extension to Bay Shore crossing received a granted franchise recommendation. A request for $609.84 to fund school census enumerators was laid over to the next meeting.
Corporal J W Edgar of the Mobile Machine Gun Company says reports of mistreatment at Montgomery University Kiel are untrue. He notes troops are not distressed and health is very good. He mentions dissent mainly from those who expected easy work.
Robert Moore and Tim Cullen were jailed Sunday night on petit larceny charges. John Taylor filed the complaint alleging a $15 robbery in a Royal street house near Charleston. The case was continued in the recorder's court until August 15.

Deputy Sheriffs John L Broun and August 7 Oberhaus visited all road houses on Dog River near Cedar Point Sunday night. Sheriff Holcombe reports complaints against these places. They found several beer bottles behind a Cedar Point road soft drink stand about a quarter mile from Dog River. Other locations were searched. no prohibited liquors found.
The board of directors will hold a regular meeting in the Inge building at the northwest corner of St. Joseph and St. Michael streets Tuesday at 7 o'clock. President E. M. Bailey urges full attendance as the meeting is described as important.

President Wilson met with thirty five railroad brotherhood chiefs to discuss averting a nationwide strike. Managers are to meet at 3 PM to continue talks and explore arbitration as a path to a settlement. The union delegates reported a unanimous vote against mediators’ proposal for arbitration.
