Five Mexican bandits and one Mexican woman were killed in a Norias ranch fight 68 miles north of Brownsville. About 75 attackers faced 15 Americans including eight cavalry, with seven wounded. Texans, including 17 Rangers, arrived as ammunition ran low and saved the party.
Carranza officials say Brazil′s ambassador in Mexico City has been withdrawn after Carranza threatened to expel him as he did Guatemala′s minister Ortega. The Pan American conference and hopes for peace talks affect the timing. Carranza moves to Manila City with possible provisional presidency. Reports say about 300 Mexican outlaws crossed into Hidalgo Tex in small bands aiming for a concentration point. In Laurel Mississippi on August 9 a 30 year old resident Edward Peevy became mentally unhinged by Bilbo’s gubernatorial bid. He believed his life was in danger for voting for Kelly and was later found nearly nude on a stump in Tallahala Creek swamp. Peevy had carried money and securities worth about 1500 dollars to his cousin Charles Randall’s home before vanishing. A search party formed by Friday to locate him.
The referendum petitions against two of four non-partisan state election bills filed with the secretary of state secure a place on the ballot for a special October election. The measures aim to end partisan ties and set the future ballot form under the non-partisan act.
