President Taft vetoed the wool tariff schedule K under the Payne Aldrich act for the second time in a year, saying the proposed rates would harm home industries. He urged Congress to pass a measure reducing duties substantially while preserving protection for wool growers and manufacturers.

Two Warships Crippled In Newport Navy Yard Incident

The battleship Nebraska grounded on an uncharted shoal near Newport Rhode Island and sustained serious damage, likely to be docked in Boston for examination. Jacob Foy Guthrie dubbed an educated burglar and forger was held to the grand jury in Chicago after waiving examination on eleven complaints. He faces over $200,000 in stolen property allegations and was assigned to a county jail cell with bonds set at $37,500. Guthrie considered bond amount immaterial.

Raiding Mexicans Reach Sierra Blanca Border Area

El Paso reports say Mexicans crossed into Texas and began raiding near Sierra Blanca about eighty miles east of El Paso. Sheriff Edwards mobilized a large posse with state rangers and deputies, assembling over fifty special deputies and stocking 2000 rounds of ammunition for the effort.
