Mexicans seek to show they can secure border areas if Americans withdraw. Obregon, war minister, travels to Juarez to meet with Generals Scott and Funston about the punitive expedition. A derailment near Juarez injures several on the Gutierrez train section.
Generals Scott and Funston are due in El Paso this evening as talks with the de facto Chihuahua government proceed. Mexican officials discuss proposals with both military and civil authorities hoping for a temporary patrol and a staged withdrawal of American expeditionary forces.
Mexican officials anticipate General Obregon will assure the United States that once American troops leave the boundary a patrol line will be formed to prevent future bandit raids. They cite his Chi huahua City pledge that Constitutionalist chiefs are in harmony and able to control remaining bands. It is unclear how the War Ministry will respond to Washington’s plan to keep Pershing’s columns in Chihuahua until Carranza forces prove they can eliminate the menace, a move unlikely to provoke a break with the United States.
Famous tenor Enrico Caruso sang to Helen Keller in a hotel room in Atlanta while she listened by touching his lips. Keller, renowned as deaf and blind, heard Caruso perform the aria about Samson from the opera Samson and Delilah during his engagement at the local theater.
Mr. C. Chandler, agent for Mobile and Ohio and Southern Railroads, arrives in Mobile with chief clerk R. H. Ackerman to meet local freight agents before a South American business trip. He foresees Mobile becoming the main出口 port as American goods find strong South American demand. He departs tonight for Chattanooga.
In Port au Prince on April 28 the government and parliament clashed over a decree dissolving the senate and creating a national council to draft a new constitution under a US treaty. Both chambers rejected the decree, but after talks with American forces they reconvened as a national assembly in a private house. President Dartiguenave has not intervened.
A large set of letters requesting passes from the Louisville and Nashville and the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis railroads for judges, witnesses, legislators, and newspapers was read into record by the interstate commission investigating the railroads. London dispatches report the British battleship Russell sunk by a Mediterranean mine with over 800 sailors aboard and 124 missing, while a German submarine was sunk by the British off the English coast with 18 crew captured. London reports the British battleship Russell sunk by a mine with 24 officers and 676 men saved. About 24 Russell crewmen are missing. The ship, laid down in 1899 and completed in 1903, measured 406 feet by 75 feet by 26 feet and displaced 14 000 tons. It cost around 5 million dollars, with twelve 12-inch guns and four torpedo tubes. The Russell is the eleventh British battleship lost in the war.
London reports a German submarine was sunk off the east coast yesterday. Eighteen men aboard were captured and the event was officially confirmed today.

A telegram to J. B. Taylor from Elmo Davison assistant foreign freight agent of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad says Davison and Spencer Talmedge escaped injury when their train wrecked in Virginia last night. They were en route to Baltimore to witness the launch of a new Munson line steamship named for the Mobile and Ohio and Southern railroads. Wire from New York.
The British steamship Industry was sunk by an enemy submarine in the Atlantic 120 miles from land. The whole crew were left in open boats and picked up by the American liner Finland. The Industry was unarmed and en route to a United States port.
A one story frame dwelling at 59 12 Hospital street was slightly damaged by fire on Friday morning at 6 25 caused by sparks. The residence is occupied by John Sanders and owned by the Creole No 1. fire units answered the call.
Committees of the Home Economics Club urge members to buy ice from independent manufacturers at last year’s prices while arrangements are made for ice at old prices. They warn small firms face pressure from the combine and may go out of business without support. Slips pledging to buy from independents are being distributed to secure contracts. Signature drives continue in coming days.
The egg laying contest in Mobile spots rivalry among hens and barnyard fowls. A pullet belonging to Mr Murray laid a three ounce egg, not enough to reach the finals, but it shows promise with practice to beat current records and perhaps rival the author of a six ounce egg.
The Mobile Item reports the police hold 390 pounds of hawser rope stolen from a steamship. An hour earlier Turner Terminal Company notified that the rope belongs to a vessel loading at the terminal.
Dispatches from Berlin indicate Germany may seek to meet U S demands to halt submarine warfare. Ambassador Gerard and Secretary to reach war lord's camp by Friday as Berlin notes good omen from visit. German officials speculate Emperor William may confer with Gerard to discuss aspects of Germany's reply to the American note.
James W. Gerard the American ambassador and Joseph C. Grew reach Berlin for a private audience with Emperor William. They travel in a special saloon car attached to a regular train, with the embassy chasseur accompanying. The journey aims to clarify the American position on the issue and is expected to conclude by Saturday.
