London reports Captain Scott commanding a Norwegian steamer for the Belgian relief commission sighting a German fleet in the Orth sea numbering sixty eight ships. The fleet ranged from battleships to torpedo boats. Scott was delayed briefly but allowed to proceed. The exact date and location in the North Sea were not announced.
Paris report says armored cruiser Leon Gambetta torpedoed at the Otranto canal entrance on the night of April 26 27 and sank in ten minutes. All officers died at their posts while 166 crew members including eleven junior officers were rescued by Italian vessels. Survivors list awaiting confirmation.
The French armored cruiser Leon Gambetta was torpedoed by an Austrian submarine. Part of the crew was saved. Gambetta, of 12 416 tons, built at Brest in 1903, measured 386 feet, carried 700 to 800 officers and men and armed with multiple 7.6 inch, 6.4 inch and 3 pounder guns along with torpedo tubes.

J P Jackson a Fruitdale farmer found a petrified object on his farm three miles north of Fruitdale. The relic resembles a boy nine or ten in age with a turtle shaped head on a snake like neck and fin like hands. It stands 40 inches high and dates back more than a million years, viewed by several physicians as an ancient water animal. Jackson invites observers.
Theodore Roosevelt testified in a $50,000 libel suit by William Barnes that as governor he spoke with Senator Thomas C. He grew animated on the stand, while cross-examination covered speeches and his salary and travel expenses.
William Devitt, a former vaudeville acrobat and longtime grocer, was badly injured Tuesday night when his bicycle was struck by an automobile driven by shipbuilder David L. Harrison on Spring Hill Avenue near Kennedy Street. Devitt remained unconscious at Inge-Bombrant Sanitorium with little hope of recovery. Harrison was arrested on charges of furious driving, claiming Devitt rode on the wrong side without a light.
Enoch Gibbs assaulted Matthew Sanders, a Black witness, on Royal street near the jail entrance after habeas corpus failed and he was remanded on grand larceny charges. Gibbs, aided by attorney Tisdale Touart, had been held on a $500 bond by Judge Chamberlain.
Recorder Edington remanded Simon Swanson a sailor to city court Wednesday morning under a $200 bond for burglarizing the residence of Mrs. Estelle Peters at 612 Church street and taking several watches and other valuables. Swanson offered no defense as the evidence appeared strong.
The River and Harbor Committee of the chamber of commerce began active steps to obtain state funding for a 30 foot harbor channel. A five member panel will press Mobile's delegation for dredging legislation while opposing parian rights and harbor line bills.

A telegram from Treasury Secretary William G. McAdoo reading that prosperity is restored and growing was read at the Southern Commercial Congress in Muskogee. Senator Fletcher announced the message praising the congress and the nation’s strength amid European war.

Drought remains unchecked in the Mobile section slowing planting efforts. Some crops show ill effects while fruits stay good and oats are slightly injured. Farmers carry water to fields in pails hoping rain comes to revive crops.
Crop conditions are not encouraging this week as rainfall remains scarce. Planting delays hit cotton corn sweet potatoes and other crops while corn shows slight stunting but could recover with rain in ten days. Peaches will be a medium crop and cabbage harvest nears with large output, while boll weevil appears in one county.
Dr. O F E Winberg of Silver Hill was chosen president of the Gulf Coast Horticultural Society at the final session in the Y M C A Harte Auditorium. Officers named include Li T Rhodes secretary treasurer and Theodore Bechtel among vice presidents. Dr Kellerman of the U S Bureau of Plant Industry warned that citrus canker is dangerous, spreading rapidly and requiring tree destruction for eradication. The next meeting is slated for Mobile in April 1916.
Tom Brooks, accused killer of KR Lee Day and Pleas Hawkins, was seized from deputy sheriffs near Somerville Tennessee and hanged from a railroad trestle. A coroner's jury verdict called the death by unknown parties with little reported excitement.
Newport News awaits double launching of the Ossipee and Tallapoosa with ceremonies Saturday. Secretary of the Treasury and Mrs McAdoo along with Assistant Secretary and Mrs Newton are expected to attend. Miss Sallie Fleming McAdoo and Miss Mabel Hartwell will christen the vessels.
Messrs. Robert Jemison Bing ham and J W Mabry of Selma with local Episcopal Church Home building committee members met noon today in Architect Weta's office City Bank building and opened bids for construction of the building and two dormitories on the Spring Hill site. The committee announced progress on the award.
