Russian forces disembarked at Marseille at noon to join French and other Allied troops in France. General Joffre welcomed the Russians in an official order praising their devotion and readiness to fight under French command.
French troops launched an offensive on the right bank of the Meuse in the Verdun region. The war office reports capture of German trenches a redoubt and the detention of several hundred prisoners.
The Alabama Supreme Court reversed and remanded the case of Robert D. Bell against A Mackey and Company arising from a charter of the British steamer Ninian. Bell claimed $30 000 for breach of a six month charter at $4 625 a month. Arbitration had upheld the Mackey position. The matter must be heard again at the Mobile circuit court.
President Wilson opened the baseball season by throwing the first ball in Washington against New York. He was cheered by a capacity crowd as he tossed the ball to umpire Connolly, accompanied by Mrs. Wilson and others.
The Munson Line prepares to launch the 5,000 ton steamship Munsomo built by Maryland Steel Company near Baltimore. Launch set for April 29 with a banquet on April 28 and a special train for shipyard ceremonies at Sparrow's Point. The sister ship is under construction and the Munsomo will serve Mobile's line, with prominent regional officials invited.
The Mobile County election board led by Sheriff W H Holcombe T M Stevens and G J Sullivan will meet Saturday April 22 to select election officials for the May 9 primary. Officials invite candidates to submit names for consideration for circuits judges probate judges county treasurer public administrator clerk of the circuit court coroner and three school commissioners plus delegates to the Democratic national convention and other offices.
W M Clemens newly elected secretary of the Chamber of Commerce and Tourist Welcome Club was notified of his election by President E M Bailey. He will assume the new post immediately. Clemens received congratulations and a souvenir from Heymar Gabriel E Q Norton and others.
Deputy sheriffs raided John Connick on Washington avenue and Virginia street, John Wacker at 4 Dauphin street, and Yates and McCoy at Dearborn and Texas streets, seizing small quantities of prohibited liquor. Charles Huff and Charles Nolan pleaded guilty in inferior court and were fined $50 or 20 days. W. K. Clarke’s bond was forfeited after he failed to appear. Walter McLain was arrested at Lexington avenue and Basil street for violating prohibition law.
William C. Koster of Toulminville was found not guilty of murder by Judge Henry Chamberlain after a several hour trial. He shot and killed Kizzie Dantzler in his front yard on April 10 claiming residential trespass and warning shots.
Emile Fritz administrator for Albert E Fritz sues Mobile Electric Company for 50000 alleging negligence caused the death of Albert E Fritz by a live street wire. The Mobile Electric Company is named as defendant rather than Mobile Light and HR Railroad Company in earlier reports. The suit seeks damages for the fatal shock incident.
The handsome new offices of the Tourist Welcome Club of Mobile in the Battle House building are expected to open Monday according to clerk Sevan. The note mentions instant furniture and fixtures as part of the setup.
San Antonio dispatch reports officers expect Scott to investigate and determine whether to withdraw troops or expand actions in Mexico. Funston's staff plan to share records on Villa pursuit while Pershing withholds action awaiting headquarter approval and resources. Willie Briggs Joe Patton Watson Thomas Willie Jordan Jackson Andrews John Reed and Joseph Jackson pleaded guilty in the inferior criminal court Thursday for selling liquor under the prohibition law. Each was fined 50 and 20 days hard labor. They paid fines and costs totaling 450 dollars. KE T Clark and Lawrence White received continuances until May 20. George Ryans continued until April 27. Charles Haywood was fined 1 dollar or ten days for assault and battery.
London reports the intelligence department claims to have uncovered a far reaching plot by German and Austrian subjects aboard the China mail liner China. The scheme aimed to spark a revolution in India after the ship was seized last February while bound from Shanghai to the United States.
A Copenhagen dispatch reports Danish ship owners informed that future British authority permission is required for Danish ships to contract oil transport. Ignoring the rule could lead England to withhold coal supplies.

The Sunny South, valued at about $10,000, sank two miles west of beacon 4 after listing and turning turtle while in tow to New Orleans. Rev J W Phillips of First Baptist spoke Wednesday on Words of Jesus While on the Cross. Professor J H Weinand curated daily music. The Ministers Union aims to reach busy professionals and reports a gratifying response.
Washington April 20 Congress moves to repeal the free sugar clause of the tariff and enact the plan to retain duties. Senate Democrats voted to accept the House recall bill over the Senate substitute, keeping the one cent per pound duty on sugar until 1920.
The March total exports from Mobile reached 2 204 000 dollars, rising by over 200 000 from last year. Cuba received 1 095 000 dollars of the grand total, with Cuba imports contributing to the year’s 219 656 dollar increase. Port Percy's Collector W Maer issued the statement.
