Oct 2 Tokio reports broad demand to drop secrecy about the eastern problem as Japan surveys the Pacific sphere. Fleet leaders and officials urge open discussion to reduce friction and shape a cooperative policy amid postwar readjustment.
Premier Katsura hosted a dinner and ball for the American fleet of battleships drawing about 1000 guests including all American officers. Toasts by Katsura and Rear Admiral Sperry followed, with demonstrations of cordial Japanese and American interaction as officers mingled with Japanese families in European dress. The week featured garden parties, luncheons, and receptions with diplomats and officials from multiple nations, culminating in further entertainment aboard ships and at parks before Sperry's departure.
William Jennings Bryan delivered a series of open air speeches across Ohio on Labor Day and near the Ohio River, drawing unparalleled crowds and near riotous enthusiasm. Bryan predicted a decisive victory in Ohio and pressed for Roosevelt letters to reveal support.

In Woodbury Tennessee on October 22 Jim Igkins and George Melton half brothers attacked each other with knives amid a dispute over the likely division of their dying mother's estate. Both men suffered wounds deemed fatal before the mother died shortly after learning of the fight.
In Trenton on October 22 Francis Folsom Cleveland, eleven, son of the late Grover Cleveland, went rabbit shooting with his father's old hunting dog. He killed a rabbit as the shooting season reopened in New Jersey.
Manila reports today indicate the recent typhoon that swept the Cagayan Valley was more serious than initial estimates and the toll of life in the disaster will reach five hundred.
The Stite bank of Vir wil was robbed of 4700 dollars and valuable papers by crack men at dawn. They dynamited the vault and seized cash and papers before residents could intervene, escaping into the early morning.

London reports an agent from Montenegro says ten days of guerrilla war flag burns across Bosnia and Herzegovina. Austrian forces reportedly tighten control, with casualties and a state of siege declared. Montenegro and Serbia consider actions against Austria amid regional turmoil.
New York, Oct. 22. Testimony in the federal Sherman Act case against the so called powder trust described methods used to monopolize the U S powder trade by cutting prices in some states to about a dollar while others held at 6 75. Witness Waddell former sales agent and later independent manufacturer testified that a board of trade formed in 1889 included prominent names and sparked a price war that drove powder down to 20 cents a cake and rifle powder to 1 and 1 10 with freight. The Chattanooga powder company was absorbed after a fierce competition that began when it entered the market and ended around July 1896.
New York dispatch reports Secretary of State Root urged Russia to revise the 1832 treaty granting reciprocal rights of residence and travel as the United States seeks to secure fair treatment for American visitors. The Pouren custody case sparked threatening letters and debate on reopening the appeal as Russia resistance prompts legal maneuvering.
