Oct. 14 reports confirm four balloons began in the international races are missing. One pilot Hanta drowned, and the Castile from Spain fell into the Novi Sea. German balloons Hogersell and Manes, plus others, were pursued as weather and sea conditions hindered search efforts.

Keefe of the Longshoremen and general federation leadership offered to back his appointment as commissioner general of immigration in exchange for Keefe opposing Gompers and the federation's executive council.
