Naples reports indicate hundreds killed across Calabria and parts of Sicily after a daylong storm and flood. Relentless rising waters drowned victims, wrecked ships, and caused widespread property ruin as relief troops scrambled to assist towns in distress.
Hot Springs Va November 20 Belief grows that the president elect seeks Theodore Burton of Ohio as a candidate for Speaker to succeed Joseph Cannon. Taft in conference with Burton signals renewed talks with a decision likely in days as party reforms and harmony loom.
Laporte Indiana November 20 The state rested its case against Itty Liniphers and Belle Gunnas in the fire murder trial. Lawyer Worden outlined the defense claiming Gunnas alive after the blaze and seen near her home months later. The defense cited a motive for Gunnas to harm her children and disappear. They alleged the fire began 15 minutes before Lamphere left the home and that the home of Bizaben Smith was near the scene. Testimony included Ray Jamphiere about alleged damaging admissions on a partial confession of setting the home fire on April 28. Deputy sheriffs Antia and Mare testified as the state’s case continued.
Chicago November 26 A car with five occupants including several women sped north and plunged into the Calumet River. Two persons, a man and a woman, were drowned and the others were rescued or saved.
Brooklyn reports state one man burned to death and 21 workers trapped beneath street paving after a massive sewer explosion. Debris hurled into the air and water mains ruptured as repair work on a thirteen foot sewer collapsed, with fatalities and missing men unclear until debris removal.
From Scott Kansas on November 20 the Fine National Bank of Murt closed its doors by order of President Grant and federal authorities. The bank owes about 750 dollars in assets and fears of a wider seizure threaten other creditors.

A man in Vermilion shot and killed his 10 year old brother at a family home last night. The widowed groom’s father Jurtler Harrisons Vermilion told police of the accident as relatives and neighbors gathered at the scene. A violent, fatal incident left the family in shock.
