A high official Chinese report says the emperor and dowager empress were murdered. The move aims to prevent a crisis after American fleet presence in Oriental waters. Both had frail health, and authorities feared survival could derail a political shift amid new external pressures.
Nearly two thousand delegates gather for the first American Catholic Missionary congress opening in Chicago with Archbishop B Quigley presiding. Attending clergy include fifty-one American bishops, eight abbots, eight monsignori, and about nine hundred priests. Papal delegate Archbishop Falconio brings greetings from the pope.
President elect Taft arrived in Cincinnati after 10 o clock and said he would keep hands off in regard to appointing or influencing Senate matters. He stressed his policy of non interference and warned against private meddling while outlining his stance on the Philippine tariff and patronage. Excamilla, Manila envoy, visited Taft and requested a message to the islands.
In San Francisco on November 1 the bullet removed from Wranels J. Heney's neck. The operation was entirely successful and the patient is practically out of danger.
Lisbon reports the Portuguese cabinet orders two cruisers and two gunboats to Macao amid Sino Portuguese tensions. The Chinese claim Portugal only held commercial rights and deny possession beyond that, with disputed occupancy of nearby islands Tauto and Colfone.
In Amherstburg Ontario on November 16 a steamer and brigantine wrecked on rocks near the Detroit River mouth. Both vessels are trapped and lifeboats cannot reach due to heavy seas. divers and pumps are deployed at Trotter Wrecking Company dock to aid the two ships and preserve lives.
New York November The Standard Oil Company announces a dividend of 16 cents per share for the current quarter matching the prior year's same period. The annual dividend totals 64 cents per share, consistent with several preceding years.
Tanidon Noy Mi The admiralty denied a Cadiz report that a British warship in the Mediterranean met with an accident. No vessel suffered damage and no injuries were reported.
Atigolen California November 16 The balloon Almerlcnn with pilot Mortier and J K Hutchingen of United Press landed at Hermondt Beach eight miles from the town after a terrific battle with adverse winds that threatened to drive the craft into the Pacific. The flight began yesterday as an attempt to cross the continent but winds pushed the aeronauts toward the sea for many hours, and they were believed lost at sea.
The trial of Abenel, labeled chief briber, resumed with attorneys Sullivan Dwyer and Johnson taking over for Prosecutor Hewy, who is hospitalized. Police have not solved how the assassin obtained the revolver used in the crime, though the wife denies giving him the weapon.
The United States Supreme Court denied Albert T. Pawick's appeal and his habeas corpus petition seeking commutation of a life sentence in Sing Sing for murder. The ruling ends direct federal relief. only possible option remains governor clemency.
President Taft announced during a White House visit that a special session of the Sixty-First Congress would be convened shortly after March 1 to address tariff revision. He said the call would follow Roosevelt’s urging and aim for a timely start after inauguration.
