Lima, Ohio May 1 grand jury returns true bill against Mary McMurray of Canton for perjury in testimony about Canton Bridge Co business. McMurray, private stenographer for eleven years, arrested. she posted bond and left for Canton.
In Washington on May 1 Senator Jett Davis of Arkansas denounced the press in a Senate speech replying to December remarks. He said some newspapers were honest, but others were subsidized by trusts, calling them duplicitous and greedy and inviting them to do their worst.
Columbus Ohio May 1 The fight for a new penitentiary in Ohio has been won The state will abandon the old unsanitary prison for a farm colony style open workhouse The bill provides a five member commission to select a site of 1500 to 9000 acres within twenty five miles of a city but that location rule was removed The measure passed the house after senate approval and awaits Gov Harris signature It marks a landmark in Ohio prison reform with construction plans and labor restrictions to be set before work begins The Young Men’s Christian associations of Ohio will be reorganized under state control and chartered by a five trustee body The bill faced opposition from prison officials and local political machines but secured sixty nine votes, eight above the majority The legislature also addressed elevated railways, grade crossing laws, and salaries for county officials with votes and potential reconsiderations noted
