Shanghai reports 275 lives lost in a collision at sea early Monday near Hakodate between the Matsu Maru and Hideyoshi Maru. The Matsu Maru sank after being rammed, with most of its 241 passengers and crew perishing amid panic. the Hideyoshi stood by, aiding only after a delay.
Lexington reports widespread panic among Kentucky tobacco farmers in forty two counties. Farmers destroy beds amid warnings from night riders and threats, with many declaring they will not raise tobacco this season. Corson testified there are no factions in Ohio schools and he asked no one to follow him. He recalled sending out a few circulars, burned many, and recommended Cleve for Taula Schools superintendent with failed bids for Greenville and Sanisky. He suggested a general law barring examiners from lecturing at county institutes would be unfair.
Paria March 24. Banker Rochette a leading financier was arrested amid a swindle case involving more than 12,000,000. He founded a bank and led mining and industrial credits in Turks. Authorities closed lines France Spain and mining credit institutions linked to the case.
Rockland Maine March 23 A political sensation arose as Governor William T Cobb received Congressman Charles B Littlefield s resignation tendered to take effect September 30 1908 The letter cites his wish to resume legal practice after nine years in the House says the duty of his congressional duties caused financial loss and asks the Second District Republican Committee to set dates for a district convention to choose a successor for the unexpired term The resignation was met with regret from Cobb and the congressman s friends and a meeting was called for next Tuesday to fix the convention date
Ft Wayne lad March 23. A youth named Dicke confessed after arrest to murdering his mother at Anderson. He implicates Reynolds and says they needed money after drinking. He details sneaking with a hammer, grabbing money and jewelry, and a subsequent scream as they fled. The pair then spent the night carousing before heading toward Michigan.
