Washington report states that on June 22 M. Von Kauff man, minister of public instructions, decreed the expulsion of women from Russian universities and prohibited their future admission. The action affects about 2200 women as many students participate in revolutionary activities.
New York dispatch reports Secretary Taft greeted by cheering crowds on arrival in Jersey City aboard the Pennsylvania special. He visits Manhattan Hotel with his wife and child, then proceeds to New Haven for Yale race week before returning Friday to Oyster Bay to see President Roosevelt. Taft signs autographs, declines politics, and the Sherman ticket is noted.
Lincoln Neb June 22 1900 Bryan readied to welcome crowds of Democrats converging on Lincoln en route to Denver for the national convention. He dismissed Lawson’s offer to fund the campaign while denouncing the anti injunction plank as a fraud and union of labor.
Paris reports twelve miners killed in a fire damp explosion at a Saint Etienne mine. One miner is injured and feared more bodies may be recovered as rescue efforts continue.
In Detroit Michigan on June 22 the Meppall Polishers Union No 1 secured an injunction from Judge Hosmer of the Wayne Circuit Court restraining Polish Commissioner Smith Police Captain Krug and Superintendent Coca for the Art Stor company and a number of patrolmen from interfering with striking union members effort to induce non union workers filling the striker roles to join the union.
Bridgeport, July 22. Post master John Rose of Diltonville, his daughter, Mrs Thomas Fitzgerald, Mr and Mrs David Gerry and three children were seriously ill today from ptomaine poisoning after eating tainted meat. Two Gerry children likely to die. The report includes Yale slang additions from a New York Times note.
Former board member of Publia service is charged with taking bribes of $1,000 from HM C Laing, agent of Me Trinidad Paving in Cleveland. Judge Rothavelt sentenced him to four years in the penitentiary and a $1,000 fine.
A boiler exploded on a Grand Trunk fast freight near Indiey City on June 22. Reginest T. Fugs of Port Huron was killed and Fireman William Brown fatally injured. Brake man Smith is seriously injured. Automatic air brakes operated to stop the train.
Priteburg June 22 A betterment in trade conditions is already apparent in the Stetadeah Valley and within another month a thousand workmen who have been idle after November will have been put to work in the steel and iron plants. Men familiar with iron and steel trade note gradual improvement and a prominent manufacturer predicts that within sixty days at least 90 per cent of the mills and furnaces in the valley will be in operation.
A rumor from McKeesport on June 22 suggests Westinghouse Electric Co in East Pittsburgh has been bought by J P Morgan and associates for forty million dollars, but the report could not be verified.
United States Circuit Court Judge Howg h imposed $2000 fines on twenty four Ma fils and fibre paper manufacturers for Sherman antitrust violations. Twenty three defendants were indicted last week and pleaded guilty with the rest, all in New York Cosmopolitan.
Youngstown Ohio police hunt four escapees from the county jail after midnight breakout. They sawed a bar and escaped with a rope. A woman, believed to be the wife of George M Crowley of Coliego, vanished after footprints point to her involvement and supplying tools. Two of the escapees are described as New York crooks. A five hundred dollar reward is offered for each capture.
An excursion train of six coaches carrying about 300 people on the Lake Erie & Western route from Fostoria to Indianapolis passed through a drawbridge in Sandusky Ohio. Engineer J J Parrish of Lima and fireman Pred Sullivan were injured, along with yard clerk Edward Splutts and others. The crash caused the train to arrive two hours late with reports of derailment and fatalities circulating before official details clarified.
Dewan O Jane Seamtary reports a Pennsylvania train from Olive Mund to New Haven narrowly avoided a wreck when the piston rod in the engine broke near a signal tower. The train slowed with emergency braking as six cars trembled on a sharp curve. a derailment was only a few yards away. The flyer was delayed about an hour while another engine was sent to continue the journey.
