James M. Dalzell, aide to the G A R commander in chief, denounces Secretary Taft for revisiting Grant era faults in a Grant Tomb speech. Dalzell says the G A R is amazed and hurt by Taft’s claims. Taft had said Grant resigned to avoid a court martial for drunkenness.
Washington June 2 reports say form makers shape planks to win support at Chicago. Taft backed by allies pushes tariff concessions for the Philippines and a labor injunction plank, while Roosevelts navy policy earns praise. Meetings with Secretary Taft and Ohio leaders indicate a strong, detailed plank advocating tariff reform and trust regulation.
In Cleveland on June 2 a riot call brought police to guard the bank of Gaetano Liotta as about 400 depositors, mostly Italian, gathered to recover their funds. The bank did not open and depositors claimed Liotta and his family could not be paid while police kept them from breaking in.
In Ashtabula on June 2, Councilman Robison a coal and combat dealer was suspended from office pending an investigation of charges filed by Mayor Gook. Robison is accused of being interestested in contracts let by the city. His supporters dispute the charges amid the quer element surrounding the case.
June 2 Nineteenth District Democrats will at convention nominate J J Whitacre for Congress and instruct for Bryan in the eighteenth alliance.
Knoxville Tennessee June 2 robbers blew the post office at Marysville this morning and fled with four thousand dollars. The raid disrupted mail service and police launched a search for the criminals. A local resident reported hearing a blast and observing a vehicle speeding away.
On June 2 in Chicago a Taft boom surged as 15 committee members and a Washington contingent arrived. Republican headquarters in the Coliseum gained a lively air with Taft figures taking temporary charge. About fifty of the 229 convention contestants attended the scene.
