Vittoria July 1 reports say about six hundred persons died in a sudden storm off Batavia Java striking ships in the harbor. Vessels capsized many passengers plunged into the water as sharks preyed on victims. Fishermen rescued many survivors but the death toll is heavy.
El Paso Texas July 2 engine fireman and several passengers aboard a Texas and Pacific Vermonger train are reported killed after the engine and two coaches plunged over a washout embankment. Undertakers and physicians departed on a wrecking train and another relief train left Toyah Texas for the scene.
Oyster Bay July 2 Frank B Kellogg was offered the chairmanship of the Republican national committee but is expected to decline. Reported he hopes a cabinet post if Taft wins, preferring to wait for the right position. Kellogg, Minnesota national committeeman, is linked to anti trust work and discussed with Roosevelt and Ward at Sagamore Hill and The Waldorf. Secretary Taft reportedly favors Kellogg, with secrecy surrounding the visit. Kellogg plans to finish Standard Oil probe this week and attend the July 5 subcommittee meeting in Hot Springs.
Washington reports the formal notification of Taft’s nomination will be dispatched in Cleveland on July 28. The decision was announced today and outlines the planned delivery by spokesmen and officials. Joe Taft’s supporters await the formal message as the party solidifies its campaign posture.
On Wednesday State Fire Marshal Rodgers appointed Col. Charles Griswold of Cleveland as assistant. Griswold, a Civil War veteran, previously served as Assistant Adjutant General of the Ohio National Guard where Rodgers was commander.

Coveland Ohio congressman Sherman a Republican vice presidential candidate returns to Utica with his wife and physician. Weak from travel he is carried to the train in an invalid chair. He says no campaign work until strength returns. Former Governor Hetolek accompanies the party to the station.
The state board of pardons commuted the sentence of Harry Orchard who was to be hanged next Friday for the murder of former Governor Frank Steunenberg. Orchard will now serve life imprisonment. Frank Wyman, appointed by the governor, represented Orchard before the board.
