Father Calmy Shoots Three of His Children in Chicago
Chicago, Jan 31 William Ti Mentsch a carriage maker at 419 Armitage avenue yesterday shot and killed one daughter aged years and fatally wounded two other children. The crime followed quarrels with his wife over the children. He called Gertrude the eldest daughter to the carriage shop and shot her as she entered. Jennie 8 and a 2 year old son were then shot inside the shop. Both children died or were expected to die at the hospital. Mrs Mentech and an elder son heard the shots. The murderer, believed mentally unsound, was arrested after a struggle. He claimed the children were better off dead than under the mother. His 18 year old daughter had left home months earlier amid domestic trouble.

Nine Miners Die In West Virginia Mine Explosion
Nine miners were killed in an explosion at the Lower Boone mine near Hawkes Nest, Jackson County, about 45 miles from Charleston.
