Politicians watch President Roosevelt for guidance on Hughes’ rising bid as Governor Hughes steps into the spotlight. If Roosevelt endorses Hughes, he could reshape the race. if not, a party split could lift the Democrats. Roosevelt has yet to signal a position.
The Postmaster General champions a rural parcels post, arguing it will boost farm income, enlarge country store trade, and require no government cost. He cites 38,000 rural routes reaching millions, proposing five cents for the first pound and two cents for each additional pound up to seven, enabling eleven pounds for 25 cents. He warns mall order firms distort the idea, and notes benefits to farmers, merchants, and fourth-class postmasters, but Congress may balk this session amid Cannon opposition rumors.
President Roosevelt sent to Congress a message ending the war tariff regulations with Germany and proposing amendments to enact the agreement as law. F Houch of Akron aged 18 attempted to take a drink laced with chloroform in a Mount Vernon hotel. He did not recover. Police report states the incident as a suicide attempt with fatal outcome. The case remains under investigation by local authorities.
Chicago officials mobilize hundreds of police in the Loop to deter a planned 60 000 strong unemployed parade to City Hall. By noon, organizers sought to call off the event but crowds gathered on Lake Front. Police ban crowds from forming, search for weapons, and mount patrols keep movement.
From Ned., Jan. 23, boats guard Holland’s coast for a missing passenger boatload after the Amsterdam steamship ran aground following a collision with the Axminster. In fog, Nieuwe Waterweg, Tuesday night, the last boat believed to have carried about twenty persons, mostly passengers and a few women. Hope faded as time passed.
Washington January 21 President Roosevelt plans to address charges that he has used federal appointments for political purposes. He called a special cabinet meeting and asked Kaman to compile a complete list of all appointments in his department with collateral data since the current Senate term began. He will issue a public statement on the matter.
Five men were buried when the Albermarle hotel near Dreamland park at Coney Island collapsed. Rescue efforts are under way to determine if anyone is alive, as workers search the rubble.
The Ohio Supreme Court opened hearings this morning on a Republican state committee challenge to the presidential primaries. The arguments focused on legality and procedural aspects as the case proceeds today.
Indianapolis January 25. It looked today as if the joint convention of miners and operators would be held in Chicago or Detroit about January 30. Several operators protested to President Mitchell against meeting in Indianapolis claiming outside influences interfere with settlements in competitive fields. Committees are in session today.
New York report states Mary Roberts known as Mrs May Roberts Clark shot and killed Frank Krady in Macy's department store. A diary found in her trunk by police reveals a lifelong passion for Krady, three months of target practice, and a claim that his refusal drove her to violence.
Six girls were carried out unconscious from the Simphon Company's sulphur mill in Brooklyn as fumes overpowered workers. The plant covers a block and fire officials fought the blaze while unsure if all employees escaped. The incident led to several more people affected by the smoke and exposure.
Fremont January 23. A blaze starting from an overheated stove gutted the Fremont Printing and Supply Company plant. Loss estimated at about 30,000 dollars. Fire crews fought the flames through the early hours but the building was destroyed. No injuries reported.
New York January reports that Harry Thaw appealed to District Attorney Jerome in the Jerome trial for the architect Stanford White’s slaying. The prosecutor denied the appeal, citing jealousy and spendthrift motives amid defense sanity testimony by Dr Charles Wagner.
In Nashville at the Ryman auditorium J. Bevan spoke to a large audience with Judson Harmon presenting. Harmon argued prosperity not assured by Republican rule, criticized laws and their enforcers, and said Democrats are united while Republicans are divided. He praised Oklahoma's new constitution for bank deposits and predicted imitates in Kansas and Illinois, calling the Fowler currency bill redeeming.
In Columbus Ohio a heated public hearing on the local option temperance bill ended in chaos with supporters and opponents clashing as the senate considers the measure. Rev W J Wasson of River Head and President Welch of Ohio Wesleyan university clashed while P A Baxter urged defeat amid boos and disrupted proceedings.
