Ringling Brothers Parade Arrives to Crowd Pleasing Circus Spectacle
Ringling Brothers arrived Sunday drawing thousands to the Marion grounds. The procession featured a golden band wagon drawn by 24 white horses and 1,280 people on horses and elaborately costumed animals. The afternoon show in the big tent drew a capacity audience as 975 performers, many foreign or new to America, performed novelty acts and the mobile menagerie. The circus grounds opened with hundreds helping to build and oversee a vast wonder city, with 18,000 visitors estimated that day and pancakes for breakfast preparing the large crew. The event was quiet and well orderly, likened to a Quaker gathering as preparations continued for the week.
