Cheater Pennsylvania residents woke to a violent morning as a mob of about 1,000 attacked a trolley car. Two men were shot, one carman stabbed, and several traction employees wounded in clashes between strikers, strike breakers, and police. Columbus Ohio April 17 The Senate passed a primary election reform bill by 31 to 2 under Representative Bronson. The measure requires primaries for most county and city offices, sets dates for municipal, township and village primaries, and details delegate selection. Both parties must nominate on the same day and local committees are to be elected by popular vote.
Heaton, April 17. The intimate circle of States Heaton has a formition leading them to believe Mr. Bacon will become secretary of war before July, succeeding Secretary Taft who is thought eager to retire from the cabinet. Tate’s retirement is said to be definite and not dependent on the national convention outcome.
Washington April 17 There will be no Republican caucus to push the Aldrich bill through the house A conference of house members on the currency question may back the Fowler currency committee bill or a postponement of all financial legislation until next session The Aldrich bill met its doom in the house committee on banking and currency laid on the table no report approved on the Fowler measure
In Blomington on April 17 a Hanta Pensaenger train No. 11 derailed after an open switch. The engine overturning killed engineer John Gap pus and wounded several passengers lightly. Local authorities investigated the incident.

New Castle Pennsylvania April 17 Samuel Parr an Hallan was held without bail this morning accused of train wrecking. He was captured last night by trainmen who say they caught him placing obstructions on the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie tracks. There have been several attempts at time wrecking here within the last week.
An official report states a French officer and twenty seven French soldiers died on the Tamlet Plain in Algeria. Around 126 Berbers were killed. French wounded totaled about 100 with many Berber casualties among the mounted fighters.

On the Staten dam from Rotterdam an incident unfolds as a mother Bertha Layblik of Poland hurls her convulsing child into the sea after steerage passengers object to the body aboard the ship. The surgeon states the child was in a coma and could recover with care. Layblik is confined to Hilton Island.
Bt Paul North Dakota April 17 Louis Orians his wife and five children are believed killed in a prairie fire that swept 12 miles west of Cogswell. The family home burned and others across the countryside lost barns hay and stock as wind drove the flames at about 40 miles per hour. The Destructive fire marks one of the worst in the county’s history.
In Clinton Illinois a mob of about 100 attacked an Italian settlement near midnight. The assailants used shotguns rifles and revolvers, firing over 500 shots in an hour. Homes were wrecked and several residents injured, while police took no action to disperse the riot amid rising tensions over railroad staffing where Italians had replaced Americans.
Alfred O Crozier of Delaware testified to a secret compromise on the Aldrich currency and alleged a Wall Street plan to trigger a panic before Congress. He said the emergency currency would bear 4 percent interest unless cut to 3 percent. The banking and currency committee closed hearings and awaited today’s output on the Aldrich bill and potential Vreeland bill actions.
