Lyle Henley fired four times to protect his mother and sisters as his father Henley allegedly pursued, struck, and threatened them with irons and a gun. Authorities will investigate. no arrests yet. The incident follows tensions described in Groton farm notes and a farmer’s advisory on crops and state farming prospects.
Mr. Geo W. Dean, raised on a Minnesota farm and now living in Groton, D. C., is putting his labor into progress by running a small scale experimental farm on his lot. He is testing semi-arid crops including winter vetch, dwarf rape, giant sperry, and thow- crops to advance farming knowledge.
The first of May is declared clean up day in South Dakota by the State Board of Health. Property owners are urged to remove ashes manure and other refuse from premises to curb fly breeding. Clean up around houses banks closets and cess-pools. install screens and bank dirt in closets when needed. Set out fly traps and cover privy holes. Do not contaminate wells with rubbish or sewer connections. keep water fresh and clean. This general campaign continues on page two.
In a Bowman to Lemmon freight car confrontation, Yan J. W. Winnegar shot Deputy Axtell and Special Officer Schlong during a boarding clash. Winnegar, wanted in Butte for highway robbery, was killed. Roy Smith survived and is held as a witness. Officers were wounded. coroner’s jury viewed the body.
A historic admonition favors silos and silage to save feeding costs. More than thirty state and railroad officials appeared before the railroad and warehous commission to contest United Commercial Travelers requests for a higher free baggage limit and lower excess baggage rates. The two-day hearing compared Minnesota rules with those of other states as travelers' advocates, including A. P. Fleckenstein and J. M. Dresser, urged changes.
The coroner's jury concluded that the deceased died from gunshot wounds inflicted by Officers Axtell and Schlong in the line of duty and in self defense.
