Enrollment reaches 540 this semester, up 17 from September 1948 totals, with November 1948 showing 608 after a rise from 523. Historical totals are listed, noting a sharp increase in semester hours from 3520 in 1947-48 to 4211 in 1948-49 and now 4838 hours. Dean Rundell comments on potential further growth.
Nine students attend Lee College this semester on scholarships announced by Dean Walter Rundell. Recipients include Annette Costley Janelle Seale through Citizens National Bank and Trust Co Lions Club scholars Wayland Cohoe and Dean Williams Jayce ettes Dolly Mosko witz AAUW LeRoy Hafer Elks Club Irma Lanora Wilburn valedictorian Cedar Bayou High School and James F E Buchanan valedictorian Liberty High School.
Sigma Alpha Chi Phi Theta Kappa and Gamma Phi Gamma plan meetings soon to organize and elect officers. Times to be announced. Miss Sylvia Stern sponsors Gamma Phi Gamma. Miss Minnie Alice Robertson and Florence Neill sponsor Phi Theta Kappa.
Lee Junior College has officially become Lee College as of September 6. Dean Walter Rundell notes the change reflects a shift in junior colleges to offer both terminal and academic courses, which Lee College already provides.
Sigma Alpha Chi at Lee College invites guests to a rush tea Sunday October 2 from 2 to 4 PM at the Baytown Community House. Elizabeth Hill president announces officers Doris Stoufflet Vice president Billie Lynne Dudley Secretary Betsy Lindsey Treasurer Eleanor Dixon sponsor.
Lee College announces a weekly radio series on KREL airing Wednesdays at 7 15 p m The winter outline lists programs aimed at students and the public with entries including Music and News Speech Class Psychology Class Student Leaders Science Department Music Appreciation Lee Choir and more scheduled between October and November.
Bobby Page was elected president of the Baptist Student Union with Jack Carpenter Joy Powell Morris Holiday and others named to officer posts. The group voted to move meetings from Wednesday to Friday in the faculty lunchroom and discussed plans for the Dallas state convention in early November.
Dean Walter Rundell states first reports will come after week four. Each student officially assigned to one faculty member but may consult others. Tests largely scored and profiled with results available, advisers to explain. Students urged to conference asap about required courses. Additional tests and repeats to follow. Lee College will sell subscriptions to the Lee Log for two weeks starting Monday. J F Koenig sets a 175 goal and allows a $3.50 property deposit allotment. Annette Costley leads sales with Dan Disbrow Dorothy Giersch Taylor Miller Kenneth Walter Joe Don Dollar and Helen Winder assisting.
Miss Sylvia Pearl Stern Lee College Librarian reports the library has 12 000 plus volumes as of September 1 1949 with 154 new books added including 21 bound magazines. About 1000 more volumes are expected this year though last year’s gain of 1163 remains unmatched. The magazine titles rise from 86 to 130 bound titles. notable new items include Adler Barker Barrie Bell Bingham Bok Booth Boutney Britt Broun Browning and Clemens among others.
Lee College reports a large ex-student migration with many alumni enrolling at the University of Texas. Others attend Texas A M Baylor Sam Houston State Southwest Texas State and Rice across several towns. A few remain at local or out of state institutions including North Texas State and La Sierra University.
Jack Alford was nominated by acclamation for president of the Student Council. A slate of 48 candidates appeared on the ballot for the October 6 election, including Russell Bailey Joe Don Dollar and Taylor Miller as vice presidents, Annette Costley as secretary, and numerous officers and representatives across sophomore and freshman ranks.
