Campus population seen steady near record in 1980s

The National Center for Education reports this year’s campus population around 12.4 million, with projections to stay above 12 million through the decade despite earlier fears of declines starting in fall 1981. Two-year schools hold 38 percent of the college population, blacks earning bachelor's degrees lag 1975 levels, yet high school completion to college shows gains. Hispanics earned 4,000 more degrees in 1980 but remain 2 percent of all degrees. Equity remains distant, Trent notes.
