Lee College Regents plan a 10 percent tax increase above the effective rate of 12.537 cents per dollar, aiming for a new rate of 13.0 cents. The move would raise about 152,983 dollars above the 1986-87 budget of 14,636,424. Voting for the proposal were Claudia Smith Wayne Gray Don Coffey Oswall Harman and Gwen Altwein. opposed by Mike Bargainer John Adams and Alden Weaver. A public hearing was held at Moody Center prior to the decision.
Lee College in Baytown announces National Higher Education Week activities from Monday through weekend. Highlights include Vivian Blevins speaking at the Baytown Chamber of Commerce, a Have a Class on Us visit, essay and photo contests with cash prizes, campus tours, and a Halloween dance finale. Local officials attend a lawn reception. Public invited.
Baytown dentist Dr Keith Coburn has been unanimously elected to the Lee College Board of Regents to fill the seat vacated by Dr Walter Buttrick in July. Coburn, 386, will serve until the 1988 election and plans to run then as a bona fide candidate. A Baytown native and 1975 UT Dental Branch graduate, he previously practiced in Highlands before relocating to Baytown in 1979.
The 1986 Lee College Foundation Gala, a $50 per plate event at Goose Creek Country Club on December 5, aims to raise about $25,000 for LC scholarships. Guest of honor is Mary Elizabeth Wilbanks, former LC student and Baytown council member, now registrar at San Jacinto College North.

She emphasizes unbiased involvement, community service, and Lee College’s role in student growth, citing leadership roles from high school and experiences in debate and the Anchor Club.
