A campus celebration begins at 4 p.m. on the lawn between Moser Hall and Tech/Voc, featuring free food and goofy games. Events include volleyball, Jello wrestling, tug of war, and wacky relay races, with an air guitar lip sync contest at 7 p.m. Students should bring their See CELEBRATION. Page 4.
Early Wednesday a fire destroyed much of Robert E. Lee High School just blocks from Lee College. LC officials offered college facilities to shelter 2,300 students. Kyle Jennings, LC purchasing coordinator, said the college is in a holding pattern awaiting a decision on accepting the offer.
One hundred twelve Lee College students will graduate at 7 p.m. May 15 in the LC gymnasium with 48 earning associates of arts, 58 associate of applied science, 5 associate of applied science in technology, and one associate degree in applied science and general studies. Nursing graduates, a pinning ceremony, and several awards accompany the ceremony.
Multi cultural studies will start this fall offering an intensified look at minority groups including blacks Chicanos and women. Sociology instructor Billy Grimsley cites expectations of reduced ethnocentrism and broader library holdings plus future scholarships plans.
Five Lee College student assistants are children of employees, making up 8 percent of 61 student assistants. They receive tuition scholarships and the college has no policy against hiring relatives, though a relative cannot work in the same area as another relative. All campus student workers are paid 3.35 dollars per hour for up to 20 hours weekly.
John McCormick proposes a Grade Appeal Committee with three faculty members and one student, to be elected by the Faculty Assembly and student congress. The plan aims to shorten appeals, with a 15 day hearing and majority-based decisions, amid faculty dissatisfaction with current process.
