Judge upholds ban on homosexuals in the military
Naval Academy midshipman Joseph C. Steffan, who admitted his sexuality in 1987, lost a challenge to the Defense Department policy. U.S. District Judge Oliver Gasch ruled the armed forces may ban homosexuals to protect soldiers from AIDS. Steffan, in good standing, faced graduation denial after a chaplain noted his orientation. He plans to appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals with Lambda Legal aid.
