Area colleges report spring 1989 enrollment growth
Local community colleges show higher spring enrollments than spring 1988. Lee College up 14.4 percent from 3 558 to 4 071. North Harris County College up 16.6 percent to 13 262. San Jacinto central campus up 5.6 percent to 9 256 and south campus up 9.5 percent to 4 581. Houston Community College prelims total 36 315, up 13.4 percent from 32 020.

College not in step with employment guidelines
Lee College administrators say they have raised minority professional staff numbers but remain far from federal and state equal opportunity guidelines. A report to the Office of Civil Rights shows 18 minority professionals, 6.6 percent of 272. The college lists 121 full time and 102 part time instructional staff for 1987-88, with only 1 black and 1 Hispanic full time, and 2 black and 5 Hispanic part timers. Baytown demographics show 8.95 percent Black and 16.42 percent Hispanic. President Vivian Blevins cites a commitment to affirmative action since 1986, but hiring remains slow due to few openings and a small pool of qualified minority applicants. See MINORITY/Page 5.

Student service fees fund campus activities at Lee College
Lee College allocates student service fees to a range of activities including Student Congress intramurals lyceums and publications. For 1988 89 the college plans to collect about 88 800 in fees but expects to spend 96 457 on spring fall and summer activities including dances security and DJs.
