Dr. Jerry Alston assumed the office of LC vice president and dean of instruction in November. He fills the role last held by Dr. Robert Cloud, who left in September 1976 to become college president. The duties include assisting the president, coordinating deans and directors, and supervising personnel recruitment.
Dr. Cloud outlines a two to three year LC Improvement Plan to enhance the campus appearance. Completed projects include roofing repairs in the Gold Dining Room and new carpet in Bonner Hall, with ongoing work on lockers, draperies, and landscaping while some items await next year. The initiative, costing over 600000 and funded from LC surplus, aims to create a neater environment to boost student and faculty interest in learning.
LC Fine Arts department will host a piano recital February 12 and a Piano Festival February 25 for students belonging to the San Jacinto Music Teachers Association. Tom Stone says the events showcase music and piano to the public. The series includes five programs this session, with the final event a weeknight ensemble recital. All programs are free. The SJMTA festival will be an all day affair with judges rating pianists on twelve criteria. A self funded fee supports the association and judge costs. Stone expects about 160 students to participate, including LC students Stephanie Brooks and Joe Tate.
LC student government unveils new leaders Larry Tuck as president Sam Beauchamp as vice president and Mary Ann Hughes as president pro tem. Films every other Wednesday at 7 30 p m began with Anne of a Thousand Days on Jan 25 and next on Feb 8. Three dances are planned including a Basketball Sweetheart Dance on Feb 24 St Patrick s Day March 10 and Colonel and Miss Lee Dance April 14 at Knights of Columbus Hall. Officer elections set for April 12 and 13 with balloting for Colonel and Miss Lee. SG plans to host a Houston Baptist College gymnastic team performance with Bruce Roush aiding and tentative dates discussed.
LC faculty selected 35 students for the 1978 edition of Who's Who in American Junior Colleges. Dean Monk notes nominees must hold at least a 3.5 GPA. Among the chosen are Lisa Kay Adcock Lee N Armstrong Bill Ayler Perry Beauchamp Gary Boswell and James Brazzil plus Joanna Bright Pam Chronister Timothy Couch Susan Cummings Beverly Davis Klaus Duda Anita Dugat Rhonda Fikes Eileen Files Robert Guenther Wade Harlan Angela Heffner Susan Hilbreath Gwen Hillier Alphaetta Hollloway Baren Jones Kim Lemelle Paul Lounsberry Gene Mayo Patrick McDonald Jana Odom Peggy Parker David Penny Terri Pittman Isai Sapien Georgianne Spiller Joe Tate Samuel Wells.
Each year for five weeks a program sends 93 students from 25 states Canada and Puerto Rico to Madrid. They stay at Ciudad Universitaria living one per room and attend classes from Elementary Spanish to Literature and Culture. Students tour La Mancha and a four day trip to Santiago de Compostela and Leon.

Barry White on February 19 with Lee Nazareth and Mahogany Rush in the Coliseum, Sammy Hagar on February 22, Santana Edgar Winter Santa Esmerelda in the Coliseum on February 26, then March 3 features Dave Loggins and Gordon Lightfoot in Oregon.
