LC employees cope with tornado damage near Harris County
Lee College staff suffered losses as tornadoes hit Harris County on November 21. Carolyn Lightfoot, campus computer center director, lost her home while her husband and her dog survived in the laundry room. Instructor Tom O’Kuma reported extensive damage to his home, including the loss of 12 of 16 trees and broken windows. National wind and flood damage reached Sterling Green and Channelview, with an estimated 400 million dollars in losses locally. 1,800 homes damaged statewide and 24 fatalities in other states.

Memorial service set for Muriel Tyssen at Lee College
Memorial services for Muriel Tyssen an English and American Studies instructor at Lee College are planned for Thursday at 2 pm in Rundell Auditorium. The campus will close from 2 to 3 pm to allow staff to attend. Tyssen died on Thanksgiving after a three month battle with cancer. She taught at Lee College 20 years with 13 years co teaching American Studies with John Britt. Tyssen earned degrees from the University of Houston at University Park and received multiple teaching honors including Piper Award nominations and UT Austin NIE awards. A scholarship in her memory is being established by former American Studies students with contact points for donations.

Regents approve center for child care at Lee College
Lee College Regents on Nov 19 approved a three year contract with the Baytown YMCA to run a state licensed child care center at the Barney Gray Learning Center beginning next semester. The facility will permit drop offs for one hour or more with no minimum stay. Regents also honored three faculty with teaching awards and praised the blood drive effort that set a school record of 412 pints.

Campus clothing drive boosts needy aid at ACE club
ACE club hosts a holiday clothing drive for the needy. Donations accepted at the student service center with donor name. Last day is December 9. College blood drive surpasses goal by 17 percent
Donors contributed 412 units to the Student Congress Blood Drive, beating the 350 unit target by 17.7 percent. The event spanned three days with 130 potential donors deferred for medical reasons and inspired praise for Lee College and St. Luke's.
