The Sept conference committee report on congressional apportionment bills was adopted by both houses and awaits governor approval. The map reshapes Texas into 16 districts with three new congressmen, placing incumbents in new, largely Democratic districts except for Mouton’s district where the opposition remains.
Florence, Sept. 4 Special to The State reports South Carolina cotton mill officials plan a statewide meeting in Greenville next Tuesday to discuss union labor. Representatives from all mills are expected and organizers aim to counter northern Knights of Labor influence, signaling a potential sequel to the Columbia strike.
Senator McLaurin spoke for about an hour in Honea Path, with a roughly 400 strong audience of farmers. The surprise visit covered tariff, imperialism and ship subsidy before he departed on the 3 o'clock train to Greenville.
The Columbia strike drives workers to mills around Augusta as mills add help. Fifteen strikers return to work while more spindles and looms operate. Mills receive offers from across South Carolina to fill vacancies and relocate families from mill houses. Strikers vow to stay out, confident they can find jobs elsewhere, while mills anticipate compensating losses.

Coroner Lonthian conducted an inquest at Green Pond near Clover last Sunday into the death of Thomas Armstrong a colored man who died Friday from a stone wound said to have been inflicted by Meek Lowry another Negro on August 135.
The Governor pardoned James Barnett who was convicted in Union county in July 1895 and sentenced to 15 years. An alibi affidavit by B F Arthur and his wife says Barnett could not have set the fire, and ex solicitor Schumpert plus Judge Bennet endorsed the petition.
