Powers and Howard Granted New Trials

Georgetown Ky Oct 6 The court of appeals granted new trials for former Secretary of State Caleb Powers and James Howard in the Goebel murder case. Powers will be tried in Georgetown next Tuesday after transfer from Frankfort, while Howard faces execution originally. Over sixty witnesses have been summoned as both sides seek fresh evidence and new lines of argument for the impending retrial.

Trial of Sheriff North Opens Under Military Guard

Asheville N C October 2 the preliminary trial of Sheriff J J North charged with the murder of Walter Blankenship last August began today under a military guard of 50 men from the Third regiment commanded by Col E J Higdon. The case follows a mob shooting incident during the Jim Brown case. Brown was executed here under military guard from Birmingham. The atmosphere remains tense and the militia is expected to stay for about ten days.

Exhibits to be moved to Charleston for exposition

Washington cabinet today decided to ship all government exhibits from the Buffalo exposition to Charleston South Carolina around November first. Government employees who care for the exhibits will travel with them, expenses for other items covered by the Charleston Exposition company. Senator McLaurin led the effort in Washington all week to secure the transfer after Congress failed to fund the Charleston exposition. Arrangements provide transport by the Southern Seaboard and Atlantic Coast Line railroads.
