Beaufort May 26 A heavy storm on St. Helena island caused an electric belt to strike a shanty killing Pa cey Davids an aged woman near an open window. Her bedding was torn and a small girl sleeping nearby was unconscious but unharmed.
On the first of April Julius Matthews married Lilly Stalvey in Dillon. Three weeks later Lilly died of fever, seven weeks after the wedding her funeral was held near Marion. In Sumter Spain Kelly in jail over the murder of W I Creech near Lee County then Bishopville. ]]>
A blaze last night gutted the Pee Dee Novelty Works and machine shops owned by W. P. Breeden Jr in Bennettsville. Loss estimated at 6000 dollars with no insurance coverage.
Edgefield residents learned by wire that D. D. Padgett, supervisor of Edgefield County in his first year, died suddenly on the streets of Augusta. The 37 year old leaves a wife and four children. He resided at Delphi and was visiting Augusta when he collapsed.
A team from Seneca driven by a commercial traveler and led by a drummer menaced by a thunder storm plunged over a mountain precipice on Stump House road. The driver escaped by leaping free as the wheel failed. One horse died. the other appears unhurt and the hack was damaged.
A driver traveling in darkness failed to stop and struck a horse drawn sleigh. The horse was knocked about thirty feet and slightly injured. the other horse was found dead about fifty yards from the road. Harness was stripped from both animals. The road bed was good but lacked brakes on the back. driver’s unfamiliarity with the road and darkness likely caused the mishap.

In St Louis on May 23 Emil Hartmann former house of delegates member was found guilty of bribery after a 55 minute jury deliberation. Judge Ryan imposed a six year penitentiary sentence the harshest yet in the bribery trials.
A Black man was lashed 200 times by a group of young white men in a woods two miles from Fountain Inn. Twenty five lashes were inflicted by a white woman who claimed he insulted her. After being whipped the man, injured and exhausted, was released and disappeared from the area. The action was carried out quietly with no notable disturbance.
An 19th century drug advertisement touts Pouley’s Kidney Cure by T Eugene Funderburk, a druggist, claiming it cleanses impurities from blood, strengthens the whole system, and will positively cure all forms of kidney and bladder disease.
May 26 Chickasha Oklahoma reports Line Creek overflow flooding twenty or more houses with all residents rescued. Washita River at Ardako runs six feet higher than prior records. Last night a flood wall thirty feet high surged down river wrecking railroad tracks and washing away paths.
An advertisement claims Dr King’s New Discovery cures bronchitis croup whooping cough grip pneumonia and consumption. Mrs CG Van Metre of Shepherdstown West Virginia credits one bottle with curing a yearlong bronchitis. Crawford Bros and J F Mackey & Co guarantee the product with trial bottles free and regular sizes priced at 50 cents and one dollar.

Augusta Ga May 282 A unusual case at Graniteville Manufacturing Co 13 miles from Augusta South Carolina sees President Hickman selling 8500 bales of cotton stock for a $70000 profit by closing the mill for the summer. Workers remain on half pay while the mill is shut and improvements to machinery are planned during the layoff.
D. H. Turner of Dempseytown Pa writes that two weeks of Dr King’s New Life Pills restored his energy to “teens” and that the pills ease hives stings and bowels. Purely vegetable and gentle, Crawford Bros and J I Mackey & Co Drug Store sell them for 25 cents.
A freight train wreck near Bryan on the Southern railway killed eight men. An operator may have dozed on duty and failed to deliver an order. Engineers Acton and Johnson survived the crash but died in Birmingham. The six other victims burned beyond recognition.

Dr T O Meritt of No Mehoopany Pa reports a startling test that cured a patient of violent stomach hemorrhages from ulceration. He had used Electric Bitters for stomach and liver troubles with immediate improvement and no attacks for 14 months. The remedy is guaranteed for dyspepsia indigestion constipation and kidney troubles and sold for 50 cents by Crawford Bros and J B Mackey Co.
Sumter Freeman laments rising murders and shootings across South Carolina and calls for legislators to repeal concealed weapon statutes. She urges strict enforcement and harsher penalties to curb this no-Christian practice inherited from war and threatening public safety.
Bucklen Arnica Salve eased severe piles with 24 tumors after hospital care failed. It arrested inflammation and cured pain, sold for 25 cents at Crawford Bros and J. I. Mackey Co. store outlets.
