Girl Killed by Lightning Near Laurens in May Day Tragedy
In Laurens on May 28 Minnie McMorris a 16 year old African American girl was instantly killed by lightning while returning to her father's house four miles from town. Her younger sister, nearby, was knocked to the ground but not seriously hurt. Nearby reports note other local deaths and accidents including a mill boiler explosion fatality and a blind man breaking his neck, along with several medical fatalities from appendicitis and related complications in Chester and Iva.

Winter Cantey Hung at Columbia for Murder
Winter Cantey was hanged at Columbia at 11 o'clock for the October murder of Eliza Kershaw. The trap was sprung at 11.12 and he was declared dead by physicians present. He spoke briefly before the cap and offered a half chant prayer, then remained ready as the scaffold dropped.
