Columbia May 22 Col Patton representative from Richland County died today at Johns Hopkins hospital after an aneurism operation. He was a leading state figure and author of the Patton redistricting bill. Shortages at Gervais Street dispensary blamed on recent fire, with no criminal charges. accounts to be straightened. Governor McSweeney reports two escaped convicts at large in Chesterfield county, Spencer Jack and D P Smith, with rewards offered for capture. Two men killed in wreck near Laurens.
Raleigh May 23 twenty two miners lost their lives in an explosion at the Cumnock coal mines in Chatham county North Carolina. The blast at 430 pm trapped up to fifty men in the east heading with five rescued. Four disasters at this mine have claimed about eighty five lives since it began modern operation in 1888 under Samuel A Henry of Philadelphia.

A Charleston and Western Carolina freight wrecked three miles south of Laurens early today on the Augusta line. Engineer Wal McKinney of Augusta and County Gaines, a colored train hand, were killed in the mangled wreckage. The fireman escaped with slight injuries as a broken engine flange likely caused the wreck, with track torn up for miles and service disrupted for a day or two.
Chicago May 22 The Methodist conference voted 542 to 94 to admit women as delegates and amended the constitution replacing laymen with lay members. The proposal moves to the annual conferences for final action.
A North Carolinian stole a horse from Edward Dean of Spartanburg five weeks ago. Dean recovered the horse in Madison county and secured a requisition from Guv McSweeney which Governor Russell would not honor. The thief's daughter offered to raise 50 dollars and deliver the horse and funds to the sheriff at Asheville if the case was dropped, an arrangement Dean accepted.
