We boast a superior assortment of merchan dise with modern stock now on display. New satin stripe lawns priced at 5 cents per yard and seersuckers in stripes and plain colors at 5 cents. Batistes arriving in two lots at 8 and 10 cents, advertised as fine values expected to sell quickly.
The ad proclaims tremendous business in shoes including ladies, misses, and children. New sandals with one two and three straps arrive with fashionable options and prices claimed as lower than elsewhere.
The store adds Misses and childrens garments in muslin and namsook. Garments are trimmed with lace and embroidery and cut to fit well. Prices listed as 25 cents 50 cents 75 cents 1.00 1.26 1.50.
Readable lines describe summer shirts and pants offered at low prices. New sample shirt waists and pants arrive with sale prices of 40 to 60 cents, and shirts valued from 50 cents to a dollar, highlighting hot weather wear.

Judge Aldrich rules the Consolidated Railway company’s tax exemption granted by Mount Pleasant is illegal and void. The company plans to appeal to the South Carolina Supreme Court and possibly the U.S. Supreme Court on contract validity grounds. The case, involving several thousand dollars, attracts national interest if it reaches the federal level. Notice of appeal expected to be served soon. case not heard by the state high court until next fall.
Rumor says a new Southern line will run from Blacksburg to Johnston via Union Newberry and Saluda cutting about 60 miles from the North to Florida. A road is provided by the old Three's from Blackaburg to Union.
Rev Liston D Bass D D was sentenced to three years in prison and fined 1000 dollars for using the mails fraudulently in connection with the Union Teachers Agency. He resigned his Virginia church pastorate but the congregation did not accept it.

The state board of dispensary directors instructed the State Liquor Commissioner Crum to close all Charleston county dispensaries until further orders. An attorney general opinion held Charleston county had no legally constituted board of county commissioners, making bonds of dispensers invalid. About ten dispensaries in Charleston are affected, the first closures since Gov. Tillman ordered them shut after the prohibition decision.

Thomas Addis recently pardoned for dispensary law violation has been convicted after 21 prior attempts. He claims reform and says he has quit whiskey business.

At 6 o clock this afternoon the Baptist church tower in Ellenton was struck by lightning. The belt torn door fade toppled planks among departing worshippers. several were shocked, with Conductor Bulloch of the Charleston and Western Carolina seriously hurt and Ashley Davis, a negro, dangerously injured. Some others fell but no panic occurred.

Raleigh May 17 report describes the worst hail storm of the month striking the Newberne area yesterday. The storm’s two mile wide path caused about 100000 dollars in damage. Hail reached two inches in depth and rainfall totaled two inches in an hour.
