Happenings In The State reports in Florence March 16 that George Washington Ford, a Black man, was found dead with his head smashed on the railroad near Mars Bluff. He apparently jumped from train No 58 misjudging its speed, thinking it near Mare Bluff.
News from Williamston reports the killing of Rev W. W. DePew a Wesleyan minister formerly of Williamston by the wife of a discharged driver. The man’s wife shot the preacher after his discharge provoked her wrath. DePew had recently ministered at Pelzer Piedmont and Anderson churches and was a respected local figure. The piece also notes federal plans to compile Union and Confederate soldier rosters and urges preservation of Confederate records.
A public health notice warns that neglecting a cold can lead to pneumonia, with weakened lungs afterward and risk of consumption. It recommends Foley's Honey and Tar to stop coughing, heal the lungs, and strengthen them to prevent pneumonia, signed by drag gist T. Eugene Fanderbark.
A historical advertisement proclaims Foley's Kidney Cure to repair kidneys and bladder, implying restorative effects and relief from urinary issues.
Memphis reports a dire flood across the St Francis and Mississippi basins in Arkansas. Trains on the St Louis and San Francisco line are canceled as tracks flood near Marion and Trice's Landing. Refugees pour into Marion while rescue boats are sought. Upstream, railroad lines into Memphis are washed out. passage through the gateway is halted, with full resumption unlikely for weeks. About 75 passengers per train remain aboard two surrounded trains three miles west of Bridge Junction, Ark, awaiting rescue.
Mrs W Watkins of Pleasant Oly Ohio writes of pneumonia and a terrible cough turning worse despite doctors. She credits Dr King s New Discovery for Consumption as the cure, claiming her child is now sound and well. The ad touts it as the only sure cure for coughs colds and all Lucy diseases. Crawford Bros J EF Mackey Co Douggist guarantee it 50c and 1.00 with trial bottles free.
The Observer reports Waxhaw and surrounding townships face a drastic new county liquor law passed by the late General Assembly. It bans sale of spirits wines malt and other intoxicants within the county, allows druggists limited sales by prescription, and imposes penalties for noncompliance. The measure, tied to a federal provision, aims at total prohibition and restricts cross state shipments, with farmers allowed to make wines and ciders from home grapes and apples.
Edgefield March 18. Serious trouble and punishment fall on two men who attempted to burn Edgefield months ago. Wm Snipes, a white man, convicted of setting fire to an uninhabited house. Rich Bostick, a Black man, pleaded guilty and sentenced to several years in the penitentiary. Snipes has applied for another trial. doubtful he will obtain it.
P. A. Danforth of LaGrange Georgia suffered six months with a frightful running sore on his leg. He writes that Bucklen’s Arica Salve wholly cured it in five days. Frank Makers reported a theft at No 196 Crow Street with $15 cash and toilet articles missing. Mary Haygood was arrested but released after a note from the burglar exonerated the cook, who was held briefly while police investigated.
The bottle carries a plainly printed formula claiming the contents are lime and quinine in a tasteless form. The ad asserts no cure and no pay.
In Pennyan New York on March 17 Mrs James Strawbridge of Guyanoga village killed her daughter aged 26 and her 80 year old mother in a frenzy. She fired at rescuers, set fire to two barns and her blazing house, then killed herself by cutting her throat. Neighbors say she had acted strangely for days and a wage suit may have worsened her condition.
A human skeleton found in a pasture six miles from Wilmington is identified by the coroner as W. W. Young, 32, a white carpenter who disappeared from Columbia May 3, 1900. The cause of death is unknown and the investigation continues. Family ads and searches ended in renewed hope. Mrs Young later remarried a railroad employee named Roberts.
