Happenings In The State reports Paul J. Steel of Chester died of pneumonia at the Clemson College hospital after weeks of illness. The funeral and medical care are noted amid other regional items from Talbotton Saluda and Greenville, including arrests for a burglary, jail terms and a fatal shooting following a gambling dispute on Fall Street in Greenville.
Yesterd ay Henry Turnbull shot Robert Pitts in Fairview township. Pitts died shortly after. Both men described as negroes, reportedly gambling. Phone details unavailable. C W Clifton known as a bogus preacher and shoplifter faced Magistrate Clyde on preliminary examination with multiple petit larceny charges but no grand larceny warrant issued yet.
Washington March 11 in the senate commerce committee Crum the negro faces renewal of confirmation for the Charleston collectorship. The retirement of Senator Jones Nevada and his vote with Democrats last session produced an adverse report but Tillman and Clay with other Democrats plan a filibuster to block confirmation and extend the extra session if Crum is not confirmed this session.
Spartanburg reports the death of Jon E. McArthur son of Prof W F McArthur of Gaffney. He was killed when a railroad wreck occurred in Danville Virginia around 1 am while returning from Richmond with a carload of mules. No further details available.
State Constable J. F. Bateman and squad seized nearly 225 gallons of contraband liquor in Columbia. Fifteen kegs totaling 75 gallons were at the Atlantic Coast Line depot, seemingly consigned to fictitious names. Bateman believes the goods belonged to two Columbia wholesale traders. A dwelling on Gadsden Street contained 26 kegs of corn whiskey nearby the Southern freight depot. The haul is described as a big catch.
Mrs. W. Watkins of Pleasant City Ohio declares pneumonia and a terrible cough worsened a boy until they used Dr King's New Discovery for Consumption. The remedy is praised as the only sure cure for coughs colds and all lung diseases. Crawford Bros J F Mackey Co offer it at 50c and 1.00 with free trial bottles.
March 10 tragedy as Arthur Pennell, key figure in the Burdick murder probe, plummets headfirst from a Kensington Avenue electric car into a quarry abyss. Wife Mrs Pennell sustains injuries and dies next day. hospital reports grim prospects and continued unconsciousness.
A. Danforth of LaGrange Georgia reports a six month running sore cured in five days by Bucklen’s Arnica Salve. The ad claims the salve treats ulcers wounds and piles and guarantees a cure. Sold by Crawford Bros J F Mackey & Co Drug gists for 25 cents.
The first victim in the construction of the Robertson building was William Dixon, a colored laborer, killed instantly yesterday when a descending elevator struck his head in the cellar. Engineers lifted the body as onlookers stood aghast. death was instantaneous.
Four men including Janes Lang Charles Rogers Walter Wood and H B Wilson faced a federal preliminary hearing before United States Commissioner D G Maxwell on charges of post office burglary robbery across several locations including Grier's Shoemaker store Heath Barrett Reid Matthews and Mackaville bank. Evidence described as circumstantial, bonds set at 3000 each, case to District Court in Charleston on the first Tuesday in April. Prosecutor Holton and defense attorney Armfield represented the parties. The arrests followed February clashes with Monroe police and subsequent transport to Charlotte.
At Mount Pleasant Baptist Church near Johnston, Augusta, two factions clashed over Rev. Kit Jones. As he prepared to preach, armed opponents entered and opened fire. George Hammond was killed, and his three sons were seriously wounded. The minister and two companions returned fire.
In Polk county, Tennessee, Garrett Heddon, a feared outlaw and moonshiner, is stabbed by his brother Riley after a long feud over past killings. As Garrett dies at home, he passes a pistol to his ten year old son and makes him swear to kill Riley when grown. The feud traces to a prior fracas that left another brother dead.
Former President Grover Cleveland, visiting New York City, states he will continue to preach Democratic doctrines but has no intent to engage in party affairs. He asserts he is not involved with recent political reports, did not meet certain officials, and seeks a quiet, peaceable life without political participation.
The U S Supreme Court affirms the South Carolina high court ruling in John Brownfield v. South Carolina. Brownfield, a black barber, murdered Mr. Scurry in Georgetown in 1899 and sparked a riot. He was convicted, with earlier grand juries alleged to be all white. his fate now rests with Georgetown Sheriff Joe McKitchen.
