Frank M Gardenshire, a noted Chattanooga figure, returned from Habana reporting expected unrest on Habana's municipal election day. He cites new polling restrictions, literacy and property requirements, and outside candidates driving a crowded race for offices including police and water. He notes Cuban natives’ discontent with soldiers, and mentions Chinamen performing farm work as cotton prices rise with round lots at 9.10.
New York dispatch reports February business failures up from 1804 levels and a cotton price surge that boosted exports and supplier purchases. It notes strong expansion sentiment among South Carolina politicians, with Senator McLaurin aligning with expansion and facing opposition from Senator Tillman. South Carolina voters are portrayed as broadly supportive of expansion and McLaurin’s reelection prospects.
Manila March 2 Col Anderson with the 6th infantry employing insurgent tactics ambushed the Filipinos near Batans. Using a spy he learned a detachment passed a row and posted his soldiers behind trees along the road. When the enemy arrived the Americans opened fire, killing twenty four, wounding thirty, and capturing several. The blow dismayed the Filipinos in that reinity.
Chicago on March 2 executive committee of the International Association of Machinists and the Chicago Association of Machinery Manufacturers failed to reach an agreement. A general strike was decided, involving nearly 50,000 workers in the city. A sympathetic strike was discounted by labor leaders, but may affect a much larger number.

In Letchatiche Alabama on March 5 a thousand Black residents protest the assassination of Jim Crosby at midnight. Crosby's wife and young daughter were wounded as attackers fled the scene. White residents fear a retaliatory massacre if violence erupts. Crosby had been a leading Black spokesman.
London opinion argues Boer forces cannot exceed 49,000 to face Lord Roberts without abandoning Natal. The Morning Post notes Buller’s position between rear guards at Free State passes and Biggarsberg can threaten either flank, forcing the Boers to commit or open a path for advance.
In a Columbia street home yesterday four year old Rachel Bigham and two year older sister Mary pranked as a patient with a shoe buttoner as forceps. Rachel pulled hard on the tool to reach a supposed wisdom tooth causing tissue laceration and alarm among family. Chester Lantern reports. Insurance Company in Trouble discusses a Spartanburg farmers mutual association failing due to lack of funds with two fire loss claims. More than 14,000 Michigan farmers grew sugar beets for the first time last year.
