Crop Outlook Discouraging Amid Wet Week Across State

The weekly crop report for the state notes unusually cool to hot conditions ending June 24, with limited sunshine and heavy local rains. Hail struck Lexington County on the 22nd. North Carolina border counties saw the heaviest rains of the season, leaving lowlands too wet to plow and many fields grassy or abandoned. Cotton remains small and yellow in places, some stalks scorched, with weed and grass infestations delaying harvest and several fields abandoned due to labor shortages. Upland corn looks better where worked but overall is yellow and small, while lowland corn is injured by moisture. The Lancaster and Tradesville areas report the heaviest rains, with poor plowing and gloomy prospects statewide.
