Change of venue granted in Tillman murder case

In Columbia June 21 the motion for a venue change in James H. Tillman’s murder case was granted by Judge Townsend after lengthy arguments. Debates centered on Saluda or Edgefield as transfer sites, with Saluda favored by some for speed but opposed for logistics. The court ordered a venue decision to be drafted and a trial date likely six weeks to two months away in the circuit including Richland, Lexington, and Kershaw, with Edgefield not chosen.

Delaware Mob Lynched George White in 19th Century Riot

Wilmington June 25 mob violence culminates in the lynching of George White, a confessed slayer of Helen Bishop. A crowd of nearly $000 stormed Newcastle County Work House, dragged the prisoner from custody, and burned him at the stake as rain began to fall. Peter Smith, twelve, was wounded by a bullet during the assault and remains in serious condition at the hospital. The mob dispersed as daylight arrived, with public sentiment seemingly approving the act and few arrests anticipated. White’s confession to a brutal rape and murder, given before his execution, details the crimes and attempted capture of his victims.
