Legislature Proceedings Feature Taxation Bill and State Plant Plans
The House, by a 80 to 4 vote, sent the Senate’s biennial session bill to a third reading as public support appears strong for its passage. Debates centered on a Whaley measure taxing stock in building and loan associations, with opposition due to potential harm to home buyers. An attempted fertilizer plant tied to the State penitentiary was rejected for at least a year. Other items included criminal penalties for safekeepers, municipal courts for small cities, and county agricultural stations with seed provisions and $300 per station funding from Clemson College. Forum notes indicate routine committee reports and agricultural institute plans statewide.
