Chief Clerk Gantt stated the secretary of state annual report nears completion and reveals that under new charter laws the office income from free charter and commission fees will exceed $40,000 this year, far above the previous cap of $5,000. John Stanton, a 70s English soldier of the federal army in the Civil War, is found dead at his Green Street home after an apparent laudanum overdose. He drank heavily for days, hid the drug in a bottle, and told his daughter God bless you all as he slept. doctors failed to revive him, and he died after being discovered unconscious yesterday morning.

United States marshal arrested M. C. Padgett of Forest City and four others including Geo Padgett Glandison Romney Alvin Biggerstein and Drury Hill of Ellensboro on charges of fraudulent use of the mails connected to the Amos Owen Cherry Tree company. They were bound over to Charlotte federal court with bonds of 1000 for Padgett and 500 for each other defendant.
