The President called an extra session of the senate to meet immediately after the dissolution of the present congress. On March 4 an ugly shooting scrape occurred at St Matthews between four men, one a negro, over a dividing line between property of principals. Three were injured in the melee and none expected to die.
An advertisement extols ECOPIUS EMULSION as enriched with Cod Liver Oil and hypophosphites. It promises strong, healthy children and recovered lungs, urging free samples and urging readers to request it from druggists. The copy emphasizes proprietor diligence and broad health claims for consumption and anaemic states.
Virginia Carolina Chemical Company known as the Fertilizer Trust buys the Charleston Mining and Manufacturing Company, which owned 2000 acres of prime phosphate land in Charleston, Berkley and Colleton counties. The deal valued at about 1.5 million dollars ends its independence and gives the trust control of the local fertilizer supply. The Charleston firm began in 1867 and was largely Philadelphia capitalized.
A steamer named Rio Janeiro struck near the old Golden Gate in dense fog early today. The number of drowned ranges from fifty to over a hundred, with about eighty six Chinese among the dead. Captain Ward reportedly locked himself in his cabin as the ship sank. the pilot blamed the captain and himself for navigation errors. Rumors say Consul Willeman and family may be among the missing.
The report details Jim Tolbert's serious wounds after a confrontation in McCormick. A mob wearing coats halted him at his work, a gunfight erupted, Tolbert fled and was wounded twice. Another man, H L Martin, suffered injuries and a Rock Hill railroad accident killed a local Black man. The article also mentions a Spartanburg soldier returning from the Philippines and a series of local incidents and advertisements.
Mee Rose Warner, a Colfax widow, drowned her six children aged from to 12 years in Union town Washington. She threw them into a 30 foot well with two feet of water then plunged in and held the children's heads under to drown them. Neighbors found her alive.
Cod Lyon won the sheriff race in Abbeville after three contests, securing a majority of 188 votes.
