Fire destroyed the Clifton hotel in Cedar Rapids early this morning. Nine guests died and 42 people were injured, some forced to jump from second and third story windows to the frozen street. Four bodies recovered. others believed buried in the debris. The hotel housed delegates to the State Young Men's Christian Association convention and Knights of Pythias district event. Loss estimated at $60,000.
In a South Rampart Street boarding house a desperate man named Sims resisted police for hours after locking in a lodger and refusing to open. Shots were exchanged, the house was set afire, and Sims was killed as he tried to escape. A mob gathered but demonstrated no violence as the body was removed.

A Lackawanna express plowed into a trolley at Clifton avenue Newark yesterday killing eight children and injuring many others. The trolley motorman remained at his post and may die while the express engineer is gravely hurt. The crash occurred on icy grades as gates lowered and both vehicles rolled downhill, the train crushing the trolley and scattering passengers.
